Ark Royal emerged from a long procurement path and fixed dock limits

Ark Royal's dock-constrained hull, twin enclosed hangars, structural flight deck, and eventual 1934 order joined physical infrastructure to a carrier programme pursued since 1923.

Notes

Ark Royal's keel had to fit Royal Navy drydocks at Gibraltar and Malta, so the flight deck projected 36 metres beyond it. Within that constrained hull, twin enclosed hangars protected aircraft and provided two operating levels. The structural flight deck used 19 mm, or 0.75-inch, Ducol steel plating, substantial construction even without heavy flight-deck armour. The physical arrangement shows how an overseas dock network could shape carrier architecture. The Admiralty had included a new carrier and 300 Fleet Air Arm aircraft in a ten-year programme prepared in 1923, but renewed advocacy preceded the order placed in 1934. Ark Royal's visible form therefore joined long-term procurement with the infrastructure expected to support her.
