Why Britain preferred a neutral food supplier

British strategy valued Argentina's food exports more than formal belligerency or the addition of one cruiser to the Allied fleet.

Notes

La Argentina remained outside the war because Britain's priorities did not require Argentine belligerency. Britain valued Argentine beef and other food exports more than the contribution of one cruiser and had little interest in the country's older battleships. By the time Argentina might have entered, neutral patrols already existed and the German surface-raider threat had largely contracted toward the North Atlantic. A neutral supplier could support the British war economy without committing its armed forces. Economic alignment and formal entry into the conflict were separate questions.
