Arethusa's Third Cruiser Squadron commission unfolded during what Vian called a most disturbed period in the Mediterranean. Most of the commission was spent in Spanish or Egyptian waters. Vian recalled that the crews seldom saw their families or their polo ponies. Peacetime service in these waters kept them away from home for long periods before the Second World War began.
