Machinery, guns, torpedoes, and light protection

A compact technical tour explains how the Arethusas combined 28.5-knot machinery, mixed six- and four-inch guns, torpedoes, and modest armor for flotilla work.

Notes

The machinery was rated at about 40,000 shaft horsepower, with four turbine sets driving four shafts for service alongside destroyers. A complement of roughly 270 operated a mixed battery of two six-inch guns and six four-inch guns. The larger weapons gave the cruiser reach against its peers, while the quicker four-inch pieces were suited to engaging destroyers. Four 21-inch torpedo tubes in twin mounts let the ship threaten heavier opponents and support its flotilla's attack. A one-to-three-inch belt and one-inch deck underline that speed, weapons, and tactical role mattered more than heavy protection.
