Why were Arethusa-class cruisers used more like large destroyers?
Short answerTheir torpedoes and high-speed closing attacks made them better suited to charging larger opponents than trading gunfire at range.
NotesThe Arethusas used their six-inch guns freely against smaller targets, but relied on torpedoes when confronting larger ships. In that role, maximum speed and aggressive closing attacks mattered more than standing off in a gun duel. Wide torpedo arcs and well-trained crews made the method more than an improvised last resort, while rapid six-inch fire covered the approach. Tribal destroyers fought in a comparable way, while Dido-class ships were often retained for anti-aircraft protection.
