Arethusas: compact cruisers with combat value

Aurora and Penelope show how the Arethusa class became flexible and survivable light cruisers despite their modest origins.

Notes

The Arethusas are presented as a high point of interwar Royal Navy cruiser design. Originally intended as economical ships using spare treaty tonnage, they proved flexible, resilient, and willing combatants against enemy destroyers. Their balance between cruiser and destroyer characteristics made them a natural core for Force K. Their wartime performance exceeded the limited cheap-cruiser idea from which the design began.
