Chapter ยท 13:12-14:27

Tribal destroyers sweeping ahead of Arctic convoys

Tribal-led groups sometimes operated about a day ahead of Arctic convoys to find ambushes and other threats without the convoy's heavy support.

Notes

Arctic convoy protection extended beyond the escorts clustered around the merchant ships. Groups of two or three Tribals, sometimes joined by one or two other destroyers, swept about a day ahead to find enemy forces, ambushes, and traps before the convoy arrived. Carriers, battleships, and other heavy support stayed with the merchant ships, leaving the sweepers isolated. Freedom from escorting merchantmen came with the absence of immediate reinforcement. The Tribals' independence and fighting power suited this dangerous screening role.
