The archive behind the Asama Maru incident

One National Archives file combines naval, legal, political, and diplomatic evidence for reconstructing the boarding.

Notes

The UK National Archives file on the incident brings naval reports together with the legal and political arguments that followed. Greenway's boarding report records the sequence of events and his criticism of his own decision to leave the liner's log unsigned. Its conventional structure still preserves the judgment of a junior officer working under time pressure. If the tentative identification of Greenway and his later wartime loss is correct, the report is also a rare surviving part of that officer's legacy. The file allows the incident to be studied as an operation, a command problem, and an international dispute.
