Archipelago frigates fit Sweden's shallow coastal waters

Sweden's archipelago frigates were small enough to defend shallow coastal waters that restricted larger warships.

Notes

The Swedish archipelago fleet was designed to defend the coasts of Sweden and Finland. Its frigates were smaller vessels able to enter coastal waters without needing the depth required by larger warships. Twelve archipelago frigates formed part of the outnumbered Swedish force at the first Svensksund. Their coastal role made shallow draught a central requirement for their design.
