HMS Ark Royal and the value of being in range

The deployment of HMS Ark Royal to British Honduras illustrates why an opponent may care more about when carrier aircraft are in range than when the ship arrives.

Notes

The 1970s defence of British Honduras offers a compact illustration of mobile air power. A potential opponent could estimate how quickly it might act, but that calculation changed once Buccaneers from HMS Ark Royal were flying overhead. The carrier did not need to reach the objective before its aircraft affected the situation. This smaller example clarifies the much greater reach CVA-58 was intended to offer.
