The trap in a cruiser built only to kill destroyers

A 1910 cruiser packed with quick-firing 4.5-inch guns could punish destroyers, but multi-axis torpedo attacks and hostile cruisers expose the cost of a narrow mission.

Notes

The design exercise asks for a ship able to fight five or six destroyers around 1910. A dense 4.5-inch battery is intended to provide rapid fire against the small destroyers of that period. A participant warns that several attackers could split and launch torpedoes from different directions. Selecting a suitable game hull also proves difficult under the intended displacement limit. The broader objection is that a destroyer-killer of cruiser size will still attract attacks from enemy cruisers. The discussion explains those risks without yet demonstrating a combat test of this design.
