A polished answer still has to answer the question

The rocking-chair analogy shows why excellent research and prose cannot rescue an essay that answers a question the student invented.

Notes

A beautifully written and thoroughly researched essay can still earn a poor mark if it does not answer the assigned question. The mistake is compared to a carpenter delivering six fine rocking chairs when a client ordered a dining table and chairs. Craft quality does not compensate for producing the wrong object. Check relevance before investing further effort in research.
