Anna Komnene's birth carried a claim to imperial privilege

The story of Anna Komnene's birth explains why the purple chamber and imperial color carried dynastic meaning in Constantinople.

Notes

Anna Komnene was born on 2 December 1083 in the imperial palace's purple chamber. Her family's birth story linked the delayed delivery to her father's return from war against the Normans in southern Italy. Porphyry from Egypt lined the chamber, and purple also appeared in imperial clothing, decorations, and signatures. Only children of reigning emperors could be born in that room, giving its occupants a distinct dynastic status. Her father, Alexios I, had seized power in 1081, two years before her birth.
