Chapter · 2:22-5:37

How the Anglo-Japanese Alliance worked

The 1902 alliance made Japanese and British interests in China and Korea a shared deterrence problem.

Notes

The alliance allowed one partner to remain neutral if the other fought a single opponent, but required common action against multiple powers. The first article recognized Chinese and Korean independence while defining Britain's special interests in China and Japan's interests in both China and Korea. The second and third articles promised neutrality in a one-on-one war and assistance if another power joined the enemy. Those clauses explain how a European war could quickly become a Far Eastern naval conflict.
