The Anglo-Japanese alliance linked security and naval technology

Britain gained security for its eastern empire, and Japan gained British naval technology. Limited wartime cooperation and Japanese ambitions in China had strained the relationship by 1919.

Notes

The alliance let Britain concentrate forces in Europe. Japan gained access to British naval design, shipbuilding knowledge, and materials. Kongo, completed in 1913, was designed and built in Britain; the technology transfer helped Japan build her sisters and later classes at home. The Imperial Japanese Navy also adopted much from Royal Navy training and organization. Japan limited its wartime commitments to operations that served its own interests, and British concern grew over Japanese ambitions in China, including Shandong. By 1919 the two navies remained allies, although the relationship had become increasingly distant.
