How alliances changed the Anglo-Dutch balance

The changing coalitions of the Anglo-Dutch Wars affected the forces each side could bring to bear.

Notes

Dutch success depended partly on assembling stronger coalitions than England. In the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch had support from Denmark-Norway and France, while England's allies included Scotland and Münster. The Third Anglo-Dutch War produced a different alignment, with France and England fighting the Dutch Republic together. By the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War of 1780-1784, Britain could defeat the Dutch while also fighting France and Spain. These examples frame a critical assessment of Charles II's military strategy despite his political skill.
