Chapter · 36:17-38:57

Sea Wolf and Sea Sparrow as competing module options

An eight-round Sea Wolf module is proposed as an alternative to six Sea Sparrows, with a carefully qualified comparison of mid-1980s missile performance.

Notes

An Anglo-Danish project could combine the similar conclusions Britain and Denmark had reached about adaptable warships. One proposal puts eight Sea Wolf rounds into the space and weight associated with a six-cell Sea Sparrow launcher. Existing lightweight Sea Wolf work leaves several possible arrangements, including vertical launch or a six-cell trainable launcher. Sea Sparrow offers greater range and, in some respects, greater speed, while comparable mid-1980s Sea Wolf variants receive a slight manoeuvrability advantage in this assessment. The comparison is specific to those variants: some earlier and later Sea Sparrow versions are more manoeuvrable than the Sea Wolf examples compared with them. It also rests on publicly available information. More Sea Wolf rounds within the same module would give participating navies another short-range air-defence option.
