A naval technology race need not lead to war

British competition with American and Italian design is contrasted with the Anglo-German numbers race to challenge deterministic arms-race analogies.

Notes

The Royal Navy's ship-numbers competition with Germany differed from its technological competition with American and Italian designers. The Anglo-American technology race is dated to about 1904, and both sides were able to live with it. Even serious Anglo-American friction during the First World War did not turn design competition into a war between the two states. Every naval arms race need not have the same political causes or endpoint.
