Why Anglo-American affinity eased coal cooperation

Shared language and workable relations between British merchant crews and American sailors helped turn commercial coal contracts into a diplomatic signal.

Notes

Outside observers often group countries by shared language, religion, or ideology more readily than those countries group themselves. That perception mattered when British-registered colliers supplied an American battle fleet. British skippers and crews could work effectively with American sailors, making the logistical relationship visible as well as practical. The Admiralty may also have helped make so much British shipping available. Cultural affinity, merchant capacity, and possible official facilitation helped support naval diplomacy without a formal operational alliance.
