Andrew Lambert's route into naval history

The reading guide highlights Battleships in Transition for understanding how battlecruiser ideas developed from the steam battlefleet of 1815-1860. That longer history challenges the idea that Jackie Fisher invented the battlecruiser in a single burst, while still recognizing the distinctive form in which he built it. Admirals is recommended for British naval command, while The Challenge covers Britain and the United States in the War of 1812. Lambert also appears as an unusually knowledgeable public speaker and a supportive doctoral supervisor.
