The Spanish commander Andrés Reggio had served in the War of the Quadruple Alliance, the invasion of Sardinia, and the Battle of Cape Passaro. His career also included the relief of Ceuta and operations connected with Oran and Naples. That broad service record contrasts with his much thinner experience commanding a fleet in a major naval battle. Reggio's later rise to Captain General of the Navy shows that defeat at Havana did not end his institutional career.
