The Anarchy, Crug Mawr, and Welsh disunity

English civil war enabled a major Welsh victory at Crug Mawr, but dynastic fighting prevented the gains from becoming national unity.

Notes

Henry I's death opened the nineteen-year English civil war between Stephen and Matilda known as the Anarchy. Welsh rulers exploited the distraction, and Norman and Flemish forces suffered a devastating defeat at Crug Mawr in 1136. Cardigan Castle survived as an isolated Norman stronghold even as much of the surrounding position collapsed. The victors then divided recovered territory and turned their forces against one another, while rivalry between Welsh dynasties continued for centuries. The sequence is a compact lesson in how a neighbor's civil war created military opportunity but local succession politics prevented a durable national settlement.
