Amphion was ordered around 1932, laid down in 1933, launched in 1934, and commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1936. Australia acquired her in 1939, and she entered Royal Australian Navy service as HMAS Perth in June. She therefore had three years of Royal Navy service behind her before becoming an Australian cruiser. Perth went on to a successful wartime career, although she, unlike Hobart, did not survive the war.
