A suspicious steamer using the black, buff, and yellow colors of Great Eastern Railway traffic proved to be Konigin Luise. Reports that the vessel was throwing objects overboard prompted Amphion's destroyers to investigate what was in fact a German auxiliary minelayer carrying 180 mines. The ship's planned 8.8-centimeter guns had not yet been installed, leaving disguise and speed as her main protection. British destroyers opened fire but struggled to find stable firing solutions against the fleeing target. Amphion began scoring hits from about 7,000 yards, and the minelayer sank around noon before the British force rescued survivors and resumed patrol.
