Amphibious warfare survives through force and geography

Successful landings avoid an enemy's strongest point, suppress defenses, and create or bring the infrastructure needed to sustain the force ashore.

Notes

The survival of mines, missiles, aircraft, and artillery does not make amphibious operations impossible, but it makes casual or under-supported assaults untenable. Normandy illustrates the preference for landing away from the strongest defended port and supplying the lodgement through purpose-built infrastructure. The recurring requirement is enough firepower, planning, and logistics to exploit a weaker section of coast.
