Chapter ยท 6:54-9:55

Amphibious warfare works by avoiding defended ports

The enduring amphibious solution is to land away from fortified ports and bring temporary port capacity rather than assault the strongest point.

Notes

Claims that modern weapons have made amphibious warfare impossible overlook how rarely attackers have sensibly landed directly into a well-defended port. The usual answer is to land where defenses are thin, then supply the force with portable facilities such as the Mulberry harbour concept. Contemporary Chinese work on portable port systems applies the same solution in a modern form. Firepower, planning, logistics, and site selection remain decisive because an opposed beach crossing compounds the difficulty of urban combat. The enduring method is to bypass the strongest point, establish access elsewhere, and approach the port from a direction the defender did not prepare to meet.
