Reconstructing the amphibious support fleet

Specialist fighter-direction, headquarters, and other landing ships are difficult to fit into one coherent history of amphibious warfare.

Notes

The surviving literature divides specialist amphibious vessels into separate categories, leaving no integrated account of the system. Books may cover fighter-direction ships, headquarters ships, or individual landing-ship types without explaining how the pieces worked together. Reconstructing the fleet requires matching specialist hulls to commanders, functions, and operations across scattered sources. Landing craft are compared to hammers, ubiquitous tools whose importance is easy to overlook because attention settles on more glamorous systems. That fragmented evidence and routine invisibility explain why the amphibious series requires more research before it can continue.
