Many Mediterranean histories centre on the North African land campaign and large amphibious operations such as Torch, Husky and Avalanche. Those operations were essential, yet quieter attacks on Axis supply helped create the conditions for them. Malta's Tenth Submarine Flotilla sat astride the supply routes and weakened the forces facing Allied advances. Spectacular invasions can eclipse the continuous interdiction that helped make them possible.
