Why a company cannot stand in for a brigade landing

A landing exercise can validate the wrong plan when a company represents a brigade and the result is treated as proof that the larger force would fit.

Notes

Raiding experience can give a misleading guide to a large amphibious operation because suitable beaches, landing options, and the scale of the force differ. Clarke recalls exercise arguments in which recent experience was used to dismiss the historical requirements of a larger landing. An exercise could appear successful after landing a company within the allotted time, even though that company was representing a brigade. Landing the full brigade under the same conditions would then be a different problem. Such an exercise tests the smaller force's movement unless its assessment accounts for what changes at the larger scale.
