Why modern amphibious ships still look familiar

The introduction frames post-1980 amphibious development as adaptation to different national missions rather than the invention of entirely new ship types.

Notes

The basic task of amphibious shipping remains recognisable: move forces and equipment from sea to land. Since 1980, development has split largely between major powers planning large expeditionary operations and smaller navies seeking an affordable capability for their own geography. Modern designs refine docks, flight decks, command spaces, medical facilities, and self-defence rather than creating a wholly new category of ship. Mission and national scale are therefore more useful points of comparison than appearance alone.
