Landing-helicopter assault, platform, and dock labels describe intended amphibious aviation functions, but they overlap in practice. The dock category adds landing-craft facilities, although many of those ships can also support fixed-wing fighters. Assault and platform ships may likewise share much of their aviation capability. The terminology is therefore a guide to aviation and ship-to-shore facilities rather than a perfect ranking of carrier power.
