Tanks are useful without being universally mandatory in modern amphibious operations. A landing force may be able to dispense with a dedicated amphibious tank if the mission and terrain permit. It cannot safely dispense with protected mobility and organic fire support altogether. The force still needs an armoured component that can provide mobility and support ashore, even if it takes a form other than a conventional tank.
