An Amerigo Vespucci visit is treated as a rare event with unusually high diplomatic status. Its effect is compared with sending an aircraft carrier and with the former role of Royal Yacht Britannia. An account of the ship's London visit published in Finland illustrates how coverage can carry the event beyond its immediate audience. Attention to the food, crew, and condition of the ship also presents the Italian Navy's standards. The example prompts discussion of whether a large British sail-training ship could perform a similar role.
