Why American arguments about Singapore pointed back to Hawaii

Some of the consulted sources contain more visible American discussion of Singapore than British discussion. The base became a recurring concern for parts of the American audience. One reason was domestic comparison: pointing to British construction at Singapore helped justify American investment in Hawaii. Foreign commentary on a naval base could therefore double as an argument about another state's strategy and spending.
