A large carrier operating with five Lexington battlecruisers would become the forward scouting core of the United States Pacific Fleet. Six hulls of that size require docks, repair capacity, fuel, stores, and other support that cannot be postponed. The resulting investment strengthens the Pacific naval base system earlier than it developed historically. Because battlecruisers absorb much of the long-range scouting mission, the Navy may order fewer early 8-inch-gun cruisers. That reduction could be beneficial because those ships were effective scouts but later proved less satisfactory when treated as conventional heavy cruisers.

Battlecruisers reshape American Pacific infrastructure
Operating Lexington battlecruisers with a large carrier forces earlier Pacific basing investment and may reduce demand for early 8-inch scout cruisers.
