The American Civil War was a river-and-rail war

Farragut and Porter became famous because control of the Mississippi mattered alongside the rail network that usually dominates accounts of Civil War logistics.

Notes

The American Civil War was a river war as well as a railroad war. Railways mattered, but the Mississippi and other navigable rivers were also supply routes and operational axes. David Farragut and David Dixon Porter rose to prominence through campaigns fought for control of those waterways. Danube flotillas belong to the same wider history of armies depending on river access.
