The action between Virginia and Monitor became the American Civil War's best-known demonstration of armoured warships. Other navies wanted equivalents of the monitor type after seeing the capability in combat. The encounter did not prescribe a finished design, but it made armoured, turreted ships difficult to ignore. Schorpioen's turret and heavy protection belong to that international wave of imitation and adaptation.
