Why American amphibious ships do not fit British needs

American amphibious designs are too large and personnel-intensive for the British requirement, so an allied design is not automatically a suitable purchase.

Notes

Britain cannot simply buy whatever the United States builds. American amphibious vessels span a wide scale, with the largest landing helicopter docks exceeding 40,000 tons. At that displacement they resemble light fleet carriers and can exceed the size of historical treaty battleships. Such ships embody American operating methods, manpower, and global force structure rather than a neutral amphibious template. They would be too large and crew-intensive for the British requirement under discussion. Successful allied equipment must still be judged against the buyer's own doctrine and resources.
