Amatsukaze grew to a little over 4,000 tons fully loaded, with 60,000 shaft horsepower and a speed of 33 knots. Tartar required space for equipment and substantial electrical generation. The installation included steam-turbine generation described as 1,000 kVA, or 800 kW, and two diesel generators each rated at 250 kVA, or 200 kW, for use at anchor. Whether an American design study or an earlier Japanese study first prompted the enlargement remains disputed. The American study nevertheless provided an independent justification for the larger hull. Japan avoided the guided-missile-destroyer label to limit domestic and foreign objections.

Tartar's electrical demands enlarge Amatsukaze
Amatsukaze's missile system required a larger hull and electrical plant, while the origins of the design study remain disputed.
