Amatsukaze carried an experimental boiler plant within the Kagero class. Its quoted steam conditions were 400 degrees Celsius and 40 kilograms per square centimetre, compared with the 30-kilogram pressure figure given for the other machinery. Special air preheaters assisted the standard machinery. Converting the higher pressure gives approximately 569 pounds per square inch. Boilers of this type were subsequently used on Shimakaze. The experimental installation therefore needs to be distinguished from the machinery fitted to the rest of the class.
