Altmark's long evasion of the Royal Navy

Altmark's merchant crew evaded an increasingly informed British search during the tanker's difficult return voyage.

Notes

Altmark was neither a purpose-built prison ship nor a large tanker, and tension existed between her merchant crew and small naval contingent. Debriefings after Admiral Graf Spee reached Montevideo confirmed to Britain that a support tanker also carried prisoners. Even with that intelligence, Altmark navigated from the South Atlantic toward Norway while avoiding a wide British search. Accounts differ over her precise movements, so the plotted return route is approximate. The task required route planning, concealment, and careful navigation across an ocean already covered by Royal Navy commands. That prolonged evasion was a considerable feat of merchant seamanship across heavily patrolled waters.
