Diu's lopsided losses and Almeida's final irony

The coalition lost ships and more than a thousand troops at Diu, yet Almeida died months later in a smaller clash near the Cape of Good Hope.

Notes

Portuguese losses at Diu are given as thirty-two dead and about 300 wounded. Only twenty-two Mamluks survived, the Mamluk ships were sunk or captured, four Gujarati carracks were taken, and at least 1,300 Gujarati troops died. Almeida left India later in 1509 after handing command to Albuquerque. He was then killed with roughly seventy sailors in a clash with Khoikhoi people near the Cape of Good Hope, suffering more Portuguese deaths there than at his great fleet victory.
