Almeida's advance mixes intelligence and terror

The Portuguese approach to Diu combined Timōji's intelligence, attacks on coastal settlements, tribute demands, and an explicit threat of revenge against Malik Ayyaz's city.

Notes

Almeida's fleet sailed north from Cochin while seeking Calicut's fleet and consulting Timōji about enemy movements. When vessels from Dabul attacked, the Portuguese razed the city and devastated nearby riverside settlements. At Chaul they demanded tribute, and near Bombay Almeida sent Malik Ayyaz a letter declaring that he came to avenge his son. The approach to Diu was a punitive coastal campaign as well as a movement toward fleet battle.
