Almeida did not blame Ayaz for his son's death

Although Ayaz's ships forced the retreat at Chaul, Almeida directed responsibility toward the Mamluk expedition and Calicut.

Notes

Ayaz's ships were the disciplined force that finally drove Lourenço's squadron out of Chaul. Even so, Francisco de Almeida did not treat Ayaz as the principal author of his son's death. He assigned responsibility to Husayn's Mamluk expedition and to the Zamorin of Calicut. That distinction left room for later diplomacy with Ayaz while turning the campaign against the Mamluk fleet into a personal act of revenge.
