Allied trucks and the German mobility shortfall

The ability to move infantry and supplies behind an armoured advance depended on a scale of motor transport Germany never matched.

Notes

A discussion of German infantry support stresses the enormous number of trucks behind British and American operations. Motor transport moved infantry into the gaps opened by armour and carried supplies forward quickly enough to exploit success. The German Army, by contrast, suffered a chronic shortage of trucks. Mechanisation was a force-wide logistical capacity rather than the mere possession of tanks and armoured spearheads.
