French command and the Allied Adriatic imbalance

The prewar division of responsibilities left France leading in the Mediterranean, but weak results forced Britain and other Allied navies to reinforce the Adriatic campaign.

Notes

Britain and France had divided maritime responsibilities before the war, leaving France in the lead in the Mediterranean while Britain concentrated elsewhere. The resulting campaign exposed serious French operational weaknesses. British cruisers and later Italian, American, Australian, and Japanese forces entered a theater that should already have favored the Allies numerically. The coalition had ample aggregate strength, but uneven leadership, coordination, and confidence kept it from using that advantage consistently.
