Allied division of submarine effort

British submarine operations in European and Indian Ocean theaters let American boats concentrate in the Pacific, illustrating alliance-wide division of effort.

Notes

Coalition forces should be judged by their division of effort, rather than by whether every ally duplicated each deployment. British boats covered needs in the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, and Indian Ocean, including operations against Japan around Southeast Asia. The United States therefore did not need to divert a large submarine force to European waters, while American boats carried the main Pacific effort. The carrier loan that produced USS Robin offers a parallel: allied assets moved toward the theater with greater need. An ally's absence from a theater may therefore show specialization rather than incapacity.
