All-forward British guns versus faster Japanese ships

The battle comparison weighs nine forward 16-inch guns and heavier armour against ten Japanese guns and a two-knot speed edge.

Notes

The British design combines nine forward-firing 16-inch guns with six-inch and four-inch secondary batteries, torpedoes and substantial armour. The Japanese ships make 30 knots and distribute ten main guns among five twin turrets, giving better individual gun redundancy and a modest speed advantage. Britain accepts weak fire astern in return for concentrating armour and armament within a compact all-forward layout. On a ship-for-ship basis the designs are close enough that neither one characteristic decides the contest. Across the whole action, however, the British seven-to-five numerical edge produces 63 heavy guns against 50, making fleet composition more important than a top-trumps comparison between individual ships.
