Could an all-big-gun ship of the line have been arranged like a modern dreadnought?
Short answerNo. Sail plans, wooden construction, deck strength, and gun weight required a different arrangement, and ships of the line already carried the largest practical guns for their structure.
NotesA dreadnought-like centreline layout conflicts with the rigging and structural arrangement required by a sailing warship. Ships of the line were already effectively all-big-gun vessels within the limits of the gun weights their decks could carry. The comparison shows why a layout cannot be transferred across propulsion and construction eras without changing the whole ship.
