Alice de Lacy's abduction and private war

John de Warenne's feud with Lancaster turns from marriage politics into abduction, castle seizures, Welsh estate pressure, and forced settlement.

Notes

After refusing Edward II's Scotland campaign, Warenne remains entangled with royal politics and Lancaster's hostility. Warenne's retainers abduct Alice de Lacy, with an alleged earlier marriage, a possible affair, and a royal attempt to provoke Lancaster presented as competing explanations. Lancaster responds against Warenne rather than trying to recover Alice, seizing Sandal and Conisbrough and then pressing the Welsh estates of Bromfield and Yale. Edward II orders the fighting stopped but eventually reconciles with Lancaster and leaves Warenne to submit. The private war overwhelms the crown's attempt to restore peace.
